Are euphoniums and baritones the same thing?
The main difference is the bore size. The euphonium is conical (the tubing gradually gets bigger from the mouthpiece to the bell) and the baritone is cylindrical (it maintains a consistent bore size throughout the major portion of the instrument which means it has a brighter sound).
What are marching baritones called?
Mellophone/French horn. Baritone. Euphonium. Tuba (either as a Sousaphone or Contrabass bugle)
What is a 3/4 baritone?
The baritone is generally of smaller bore, but it also has more cylindrical bore tubing for more of the instrument, like a trumpet or trombone. This gives the baritone a more centered, projecting, soloistic tone. This is a full size baritone horn, but it’s 3/4 size compared to a full size euphonium.

Can baritone play euphonium music?
It won’t work, because it won’t fit. Because the baritone has a smaller bore, it has a much brighter and brassier sound than a euphonium. A euphonium has a larger bore, so its tone will sound darker and deeper.
Is a baritone bigger than a tuba?
Many students start on the Baritone before the Tuba because it is a bit smaller and more manageable. The mouthpiece is also smaller (same size as the Trombone), so it is a little easier to produce the sound.
Where did baritones originate?
The baritone is an instrument within the modern brass family which was developed during the period of ancient Rome. However, the modern baritone’s first appearance was in Germany, in the 1800s through two people, namely Ferdinand Sommer and Carl Moritz.
Who made the first baritone?
The euphonium is said to have been invented, as a “wide-bore, valved bugle of baritone range”, by Ferdinand Sommer of Weimar in 1843, though Carl Moritz in 1838 and Adolphe Sax in 1843 have also been credited.
How heavy is a marching baritone?
An average weight for a baritone is around 6 pounds. An average weight for a euphonium is 7 or 8 pounds.
Who invented the mellophone?
In general, the mellophone has its origin in the horn design boom of the 19th century. The earliest version was the Koenig horn, based on a design by Herman Koenig, but manufactured by Antoine Courtois, who may also have played a significant role in its design.
